Spring 2014

Hello Students and Parents,

The fourth quarter is off to a great start in Wellness. Our badminton unit is currently underway, and we look forward to the possibility of warm sunny days in our future, so we can get back outside.

This quarter eighth graders will be completing a food production and sustainability unit. In addition, we have guest speakers joining us from West Linn High School and Volunteers of America.

Our sixth and seventh graders began their units on substance abuse. Our focus for sixth graders is tobacco education and the power of good decision making. Seventh graders will complete a three week alcohol unit as well as have guest speakers come from Clackamas Women’s Services to educate our students on healthy relationships.

Seventh grade just completed our healthy hearts and hands only CPR unit before spring break. A big thank you to Legacy Meridian Park Hospital and TVF&R for giving our students this wonderful education.

There are two free programs in our community that screen kids 12-18 for heart problems. One is with Providence and the other is with Legacy. This is an excellent resource and opportunity for screening and  early detection.

Play Smart – Offered by Providence (free)

Teen Athlete Cardiac Screening- Offered by Legacy Health (It may be $5 for holding the spot)

December Wellness 2013

Hello Students and Parents,

We are enjoying a busy week in wellness, as we prepare for the much anticipated holiday break!

Our 8th graders did an outstanding job presenting their health research topics. Student work ethic and effort was superior. Each class had the opportunity to learn about 25 to 35 health related topics regarding nutrition, drugs or a disease. We greatly appreciate the effort of our students!

6th and 7th graders are wrapping up their substance abuse units and preparing for our quarter 2 health quiz after the break.

All grade levels are currently participating in our badminton unit. Students are learning the history, basic rules and score keeping for this fun life-long sport. This unit continues to be a favorite among all three grade levels. This week our focus has been on peer assessment for various shots, strategy and serve consistency, during our round robin tournaments.

Our enrichment club runners did an outstanding job at the Ugly Holiday Sweater 5k this past Saturday. We had so much fun running and enjoying good food, company and admiring the creative ugly sweaters. Below is a picture of some of our outstanding runners! Way to go! Each runner donated to the West Linn Food Pantry, benefiting members of our community.

November Wellness

Hello Students and Parents,

The second quarter is off to a great start! Our 6th and 7th graders are currently participating in a jump rope fitness unit and our 8th graders are preparing for their health presentations. 6th and 7th grade will begin their substance abuse units this week during health.

The city of West Linn is hosting its annual race before the holiday parade on December 14th. Our Rosemont students can participate in the race for free, with the donation of 5 cans of food to benefit the West Linn food pantry. See registration form link below.

This is a great opportunity to be active as a family! Mrs. McKern and students in the enrichment running club will be participating in the race, and we would love students and families to join us.

October Wellness

Hello Students and Parents,

We just wrapped up our first unit of the year, and students are excited for our Team Champion and Leader awards. Despite the early rain, students did an outstanding job throughout their units, developing skills related to both sports and teamwork.

Check out our pictures below. We had a great time with class vs. class competitions this week. Student leadership and communication as been exceptional this fall.

Next week, each grade level with begin a new unit. We will also continue with our weekly health assignments.

7th and 8th graders…one more reminder that next week related arts will switch to every other day block scheduling. This means 1st and 3rd period students have Wellness on Mondays and Wednesdays and 2nd and 4th period students come Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday will remain an “E” day and there are no changes to the 6th grade schedule.

One reminder this month: The quarter ends in four weeks, so if you have been absent remember to fill out your homework sheet and turn it in to Mr. P or Mrs. McKern.

Happy Fall!

Wellness May 2013

Hello Parents  and Students,

We are enjoying the beautiful weather and opportunities to be outside this month. We are on week two of our golf unit. This is a new unit for students and it is great to see their excitement and teamwork. Incorporating more lifetime sport and activity units has proven to be a big success with our students.

Throughout the few weeks we have left, we will wrap up golf and finish the year with a bowling unit. Eighth graders will get to go on the much anticipated bowling field trip to Wilsonville Lanes the first week of June.

Sixth and seventh graders will conclude the health portion of our class with various lessons and activities centering around substance abuse. Eighth graders will have a variety of guest speakers ranging from Volunteers of America to the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Taskforce from WLHS.

Thank you for your continued support!
